The Great Kitchen Remodel

When remodeling your kitchen you need to look at the entire kitchen and what will need to be replaced. Do your tiles, sink, kitchen floors or cabinets seem warn down, or are they damaged, maybe it is time to remodel your kitchen. Paint or refinish your cabinets instead of replacing them. In many older homes the cabinets are made from solid wood and are of higher quality than you can purchase today, today the low to mid-end cabinets are made from particleboard or some type of resin and or Formica. You can enjoy installing new furniture, replacing cabinet doors for a quick and cost effective way to give your cupboards and cabinets a facelift, get your kitchen cabinets refaced it is less expensive than redoing the entire cabinets with new ones. Add some details to your kitchen by using light-colored cabinets or glass doors and don’t forget to create more storage inside each cabinet. When redoing the kitchen make sure the cupboards, cabinets and drawers are filling up the empty spaces, the more storage space you have for your kitchen things the better.

Kitchens that you design should be usable to you and your family. Almost every kitchen has a design flaw or something that can be changed to make the space more workable. Kitchen remodeling can help you to get just the right kitchen for you without costing the a lot of money, and you can come up with the design of your choice so that you end up with the perfect kitchen for your needs and your tastes. So while kitchens may be among the easiest to plan, design or remodel, today’s assorted requirement for kitchens might make any designer more often scratching his head. The new (and better) concept in modern kitchen design comes from the eastern way. Design your kitchen (and your household) such that it would make the kitchen the center of the household.

Planning is everything. A well thought-out detailed plan is a must before you begin remodeling your kitchen. How much money do you plan to spend? Once a detailed plan has been made, you can then ask the contractor to start on the renovation. However, in the present situation, contractors or designers suggest or recommend that a kitchen remodeling plan must have at least a good amount of working space where several people can work, and do multiple tasks. Just make sure that your priorities, needs, and requirements must be served and fulfilled with the kitchen plan that you have.

The budget is very important when remodeling a kitchen, There are a number of ways you can stay within your budget, beginning with staying on top of every dollar that goes out. Coming up with a realistic budget up front will help you avoid overspending as the project moves forward. Be sure to leave a cushion in your budget for additional, unexpected expenses. If you are on a tight budget kitchen remodeling becomes very challenging when you are faced with space restrictions. Without a complete and detailed budget prepared before the kitchen renovation begins, you may get swept into a spending spiral of unbudgeted extras. It is important to prepare a budget for your kitchen remodeling plan before you start implementing it. Start setting a budget by deciding how much you are willing to spend on the project. When planning on a kitchen remodeling project, the budget is the first thing to consider. If you don’t have a remodeling budget, your cost of remodeling can easily exceed your return on investment.

Confusing and out of place kitchen. Pick a counter top and go with it throughout. Laminate doesn't buy you anything these days. Kitchens are expected to be a stone of some sort….granite, silestone, or any of the new stones. Tile can be done but you would then have to do it for your entire kitchen countertops. Use the tile you have been given for your backsplash and pick a coordinating stone countertop to match it. That would pull your kitchen design together. Kitchens and baths are two areas you shouldn't go cheap on. It will always affect your resale. If you don't do it now, you will have to do it later and what you are proposing is just too disjointed and doesn't flow. You will be wasting your money. Wait until you have the money to do it right.

That is a division of sears. As a contractor i suggest you use a local professional. These large companies such as sears, lowes and home depot tend to:
    A: Be way more expensive.
B: Use the cheapest people to do the job as fast as they can.
    (this means quality suffers)
C: They use illegal and non-licensed labor.

I would suggest getting a second and maybe third bid. Asking here in this forum is only guessing at the situation.

37 just for labor sounds high, but it is CA. So, it might just be you have a difficult tearout. With the removal of support walls and adding reinforce steel beams (assuming), you have a larger liability on your hands than most remodels.

It is always wise to get at least two estimates on any job that size, and any builder should know they are probably not the only one bidding on the job.

Don't fear asking, for it is asking in advance that keeps you out of Judge Judy's court room. Everyone needs a clear picture of what to expect.

    Hello-

I am a kitchen & bath designer but in a different geological area. I would suggest that you do what is called a "comp" (comparesion) of the houses around you. If they have granite tops and stainless appliances, go for it!!! If not, you are going to price yourself out of the neighborhood. You will never get your money back (it is projected that from the "get-go" you are only getting 86% at the time of the sale anyway) But on the flip side, you will sell your house much faster if you do remodel it. I would suggest keeping the price resanable by keeping the fixtures in the same location (e.g.: sink), doing a semi-custom line of cabinets and maybe splurging on granite. After all, you are going to live there for another 5 years!

We remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago (we live in Texas). The room is about 12 feet by 12 feet. We stripped everything out to the walls, including flooring. The only thing we didn't replace were the appliances. We spent about $2,000. My husband built the cabinets so that saved quiet a bit. I know that Home Depot has pre-built cabinets that may work for you and save you some money. They also have people there that can help you design your space. good luck!

http://www.diynetwork.com is my resource for remodeling my 60 year old house on a budget. I resently redid my kitchen…sand, prime, paint, new hardware…took brown varnish to…a vanilla cream, yellow, and crome modern kitchen. There was a lot more to it but my point is paint is $17 a gallon and hardware is as much as $5 a fixture. This is what they'll tell you and show you at DIY network. Contact Marie at 608-269-2918if you need dish network.

Wow, that's a difficult situation for you – as kitchen's are usually designed to be so openly accessable! I would purchase some of the double doors (like stable doors) – depending on your son's age of course. They could accent your kitchen cupboards and you could open the top section to watch him play etc. while you cook, but still have the bottom section locked so he can't get in. The island is a good idea and you can have a stool for him so he can be there with you and you can monitor what he eats whilst you cook. There are so many parent friendly – but child impossible locks and devices avaialble. I saw one once which had special magnets in the cupboards – you could NOT open anything without the special magnet handle. The cupboards were literally glued shut! The magnet handle you keep high up on a key chain or wherever and you just hold it onto the cupboard and it unlocks it for you – amazing and really clever! Keep your food-stuffs in the higher overhead cupboards and all the boring plates, plastic containers, pots etc. in the low ones. I found a website with a similar magnet / key thing – listed below.
You must be a great Mom. I find it hard with four children who do not have any medical syndromes. Hope my ideas help a bit.

in a word, no. the entire purpose of paying for an extremely expensive "apron" front sink, is to see the "apron." single basin rectangle sinks are out there, you just have to look. go to your local home store and talk to someone in the kitchen fixtures section – they should be able to steer you towards manufacturers that offer that style sink. or, go directly to the counter top manufacturer's web site – i bet they show exactly the kind of sink you are looking for – keep in mind, however, you cannot under-mount a sink into a laminate top, so you will have to go with an up-market counter top product like stone or quartz. anything you want is always available, at a price.

If you are going to use a contractor, then your first step is to get 3 or 4 of them out there to bid the job. They will take measurements and discuss various options with you, then get back to you with a proposal. Your next step would be choosing a contractor based on those proposals. A good rule of thumb is to go middle of the road. Don't choose the highest guy and don't choose the lowest guy. And make sure the scheduling works for you and that you get a time table in writing, and cost over-runs must be approved by you beforehand.

After you choose a contractor, the rest of the steps (permits, demo, etc.) are up to him. You don't have to make all decisions beforehand. The proposal will usually have budgets alloted for various things (cabinets, fixtures, tile, etc.) and you can shop and choose within those budgets while construction is started.
