The balance of Yin and Yang: if you have a lot of high things, add a few low ones. If your carpet has bright colors, use cushions in soft shades. Watch the balance of the horizontal/vertical objects, and the hard/soft objects to balance the yin and yang in the room.

Mirrors: mirrors are very good for the feng shui living room. However, you need to make sure that the mirrors do not reflect the bathroom, stairs or kitchen. Do not place a mirror directly opposite the door; otherwise the mirror can reflect the Qi back.

Aquariums: movement of fish will help to create good energy. For good luck, place the aquarium on the north side of the room. The size of the aquarium doesn’t matter. I know this will depend on so many things–type of wood, size, height, and depth of shelving. Some examples would be useful. I need to come up with some home improvement estimates for a lender quickly, and local contractors are not getting back to me as quickly as I'd like.

When making home improvements, which is of more value in the long run – Pocket Doors or Interior French Doors?
I am cutting a hole in a wall between my living room and a spare bedroom that we no longer use. What I'm going to do is to put my sleeper sofa in the new open area for when we do have guests that spend the night.

I have 2 options: I can put a set of interior french doors (5') that can be closed for guests or left open to have a larger area.

The second option is to put a set of pocket doors in and I can use 36" doors for a wider opening.

The cost is about the same either way I go.

Anyone have any ideas?

They can either be placed along one side of your living room, or placed one each on either side of the main sofa. The latter is better if you have another sofa set to place, or have a five-piece set that needs more space, and would balance out the settings. If you have a stand-alone leather recliner, it is best placed in a corner where it will go well with the sitting pattern. Children generally love recliners, as it offers them a degree of comfort exceeding the normal sofas.

Look for a smart center table to go with the overall settings. Glass tops are mostly preferred for their elegant looks and large variety in which they are available. A combination of a glass top and chrome-plated frame is the latest ‘in’ thing, and will definitely give that extra special look to your room.

So don’t just procrastinate. Go ahead and make a start, and I am sure you will soon end up with a living room you will be happy to invite your guests to.

How old can paint be before you cannot use it anymore?
I bought interior paint about a year to a year and a half ago, intending to piant my living room, and never got around to it! Now that spring is here again, i've got the fever to do some home improvements. Do you know if the paint is still 'viable' enough to use? What can I do to insulate a basement?
I'm moving in with a friend who is renting a home. And my living room suite will be placed in a corner of the basement. The basement temperature is about 72 degrees F. I live in southwest Ohio and the average summer/winter temp here is about 85-90/10-25 degrees F. My question is, what can I do to insulate that portion of the basement, to keep heat in during the winter? The basement is unfinished and has no insulation. We’re renting, so there is not much I can do far as home improvement goes.

So far, my friend suggested hanging bed sheets from the ceiling around the living area and to put down a rug for insulation. This may be my only option, but I would like more input. I don’t care if it looks tacky, as long as it doesn’t get terribly cold down there.

Also, I know many will suggest that I don’t move in, but I cannot resist the offer given to me. The monthly rent is only $275 mo., plus utilities.

Casual Living Room Design Tips

When creating a design for your living room, keep in mind how the living room will be used. A living room with surround sound, for example, will require a particular design in order to get the full effect of that sound. Whether there is surround sound or no sound, a living room should be a room that creates a relaxing atmosphere in which one can read quietly, visit with friends, or any number of things in a comfortable manner.

Consideration of furniture is important. A casual living room will not have stiff furniture that provides no comfort when sitting. That type of furniture should be reserved for waiting rooms at a doctor’s office or school rooms. A comfortable living room’s couches and chairs will be made out of soft, perhaps plush fabrics that invite a person to relax on them. Their comfort will be further enhanced by soft, plush pillows of the same fabric. Some will even add pillows that contrast with the colors of the couches or chairs. This furniture is something that can be relaxed and socialized on in complete comfort.

Flooring is another important consideration for this room. Hardwood floors are very popular right now, yet they do not have to be the only choice. Hardwood is pretty and easy to clean, yet it’s cold. If your home is often cold and you’re looking for economical ways to keep it warmer, carpeting is one way to do that. Carpeting will hold the heat in the room better than hardwood flooring which will make the room warmer longer. This will in turn use your furnace less and your money will be saved. However, if you have allergies to dust or other airborne particles, carpeting may not be a good choice. No matter how often you vacuum, it can be very difficult to get those allergens out of the air. For this type of person, a hardwood floor would probably be the better choice because there will be less fibers in the room to hold in those allergens.

Television and sound system would also be a consideration into your design. If your television is large, it will take a large portion of area in the living room. Alternately, if it is small it won’t take up as much room. Either way, the seating and sound should be surrounding the viewing area at a reasonable distance for both sight and sound. If you have surround sound, you have the advantage of bringing the sound to the seating area. Otherwise, the seating should surround the television at a distance that makes listening happen easily.

Living rooms should be places of comfort. They should be conducive to visiting and mingling with guests as well as watching television. With the listed tips above, your living room will bring comfort and joy to all of its inhabitants.

Those in the last trimester-Home improvement?
So, for those of you in those last 12 weeks, what is still left to do on you home improvement /baby preparation lists?

I am 32 weeks. We got the Baby's room set up last night. All we have left is to put new flooring down in the Kitchen and Living Room and paint those rooms in the last 7.5 weeks. Also we need to get some clothes and other baby items together.

I want to do so many things… new driveway (concrete instead of gravel), update kitchen, buy living room furniture, update bathrooms, add another bedroom, full privacy fence, etc. What would Dave Ramsey say? I have no debt except the house, and 6 months emergency funds, and a small 401k, no IRAs. 39 years old.
SmartA, can you tell me if that is 15% of gross or net?
