Cost of built-in bookcases in a living room?
I know this will depend on so many things–type of wood, size, height, and depth of shelving. Some examples would be useful. I need to come up with some home improvement estimates for a lender quickly, and local contractors are not getting back to me as quickly as I'd like.

Here's what I'm imagining…
- Two book cases built into the wall, separated in the middle by an existing window.
- 9 feet to the ceiling
- 4 feet wide, for each bookcase

When making home improvements, which is of more value in the long run – Pocket Doors or Interior French Doors?
I am cutting a hole in a wall between my living room and a spare bedroom that we no longer use. What I'm going to do is to put my sleeper sofa in the new open area for when we do have guests that spend the night.

I have 2 options: I can put a set of interior french doors (5') that can be closed for guests or left open to have a larger area.

The second option is to put a set of pocket doors in and I can use 36" doors for a wider opening.

The cost is about the same either way I go.

Anyone have any ideas?

The latter is better if you have another sofa set to place, or have a five-piece set that needs more space, and would balance out the settings. If you have a stand-alone leather recliner, it is best placed in a corner where it will go well with the sitting pattern. Children generally love recliners, as it offers them a degree of comfort exceeding the normal sofas.

Look for a smart center table to go with the overall settings. Glass tops are mostly preferred for their elegant looks and large variety in which they are available. A combination of a glass top and chrome-plated frame is the latest ‘in’ thing, and will definitely give that extra special look to your room.

So don’t just procrastinate. Go ahead and make a start, and I am sure you will soon end up with a living room you will be happy to invite your guests to.

How old can paint be before you cannot use it anymore?
I bought interior paint about a year to a year and a half ago, intending to piant my living room, and never got around to it! Now that spring is here again, i've got the fever to do some home improvements. Do you know if the paint is still 'viable' enough to use? It has remained sealed, kept at room temp, and is a good brand name- Dutch Boy. I'm hoping all these factors will work in my favor! I'd hate to go out and buy 4 new cans! Thanks!

If space in your living room is something that you are lacking, it can still be done with style. When you have a small living space usually you want to do what you can to maximize the area you have as well as keep it aesthetically pleasing. Luckily, decorating a small living room to be big on style can be done with some simple steps that will be expressed within this article.

When maximizing a small space, think simple. A room that has a lot of pieces of furniture and artwork can start to get crowded quickly. At this point, you have a living room that feels, looks, and is small. The trick to maximizing the space that you have is to think simple. If you want to paint your living rooms walls, keep to the brighter side of the color palette. Do not choose dark colors because they will only close the living room in and make it seem smaller. When choosing paintings to display, take your time and choose only a few. The artwork that you choose should also have lighter tones to further enhance the illusion of space while adding a decorative touch to the room.

Again, a cluttered wall will make the room seem smaller. When decorating a small living room, it is best to choose a few items that you really like and display those; likewise with knickknacks. Corner shelves are wonderful for small pieces that you’d like to display. They do not take a lot of room and you can display pieces on them with relatively little trouble. Do not, however, overload these shelves. This will still be clutter. Choose a few pieces that match the current decor and display those.

Usable items can be blended with the decor to enhance it as well as serve a practical purpose. Instead of having three or four remote controls placed randomly throughout the living room, buy a remote caddy in the shape of a boat to enhance the outdoor decor throughout the room. This is only one example, but usable items are often incorporated in decor if you shop in the right places. Craft stores or local craft sales are famous for carrying items that you might not find in the chain stores. Use this to your advantage. Remote control caddies are not all. You can find pitchers that are decorated several different ways that can act as vases for flowers that will enhance your decor among several other things.

A small living room is ripe for creative decorative solutions. They can be decorated to add space, enhance aesthetics, and promote usability. More than any of these, they are a cozy, intimate area in which a family can create strong bonds.

Help answer the question about living room improvement

What can I do to insulate a basement?
I'm moving in with a friend who is renting a home. And my living room suite will be placed in a corner of the basement. The basement temperature is about 72 degrees F. I live in southwest Ohio and the average summer/winter temp here is about 85-90/10-25 degrees F. My question is, what can I do to insulate that portion of the basement, to keep heat in during the winter? The basement is unfinished and has no insulation. We’re renting, so there is not much I can do far as home improvement goes.

So far, my friend suggested hanging bed sheets from the ceiling around the living area and to put down a rug for insulation. This may be my only option, but I would like more input. I don’t care if it looks tacky, as long as it doesn’t get terribly cold down there.

Also, I know many will suggest that I don’t move in, but I cannot resist the offer given to me. The monthly rent is only $275 mo., plus utilities.

If your home is often cold and you’re looking for economical ways to keep it warmer, carpeting is one way to do that. Carpeting will hold the heat in the room better than hardwood flooring which will make the room warmer longer. This will in turn use your furnace less and your money will be saved. However, if you have allergies to dust or other airborne particles, carpeting may not be a good choice. No matter how often you vacuum, it can be very difficult to get those allergens out of the air. For this type of person, a hardwood floor would probably be the better choice because there will be less fibers in the room to hold in those allergens.

Television and sound system would also be a consideration into your design. If your television is large, it will take a large portion of area in the living room. Alternately, if it is small it won’t take up as much room. Either way, the seating and sound should be surrounding the viewing area at a reasonable distance for both sight and sound. If you have surround sound, you have the advantage of bringing the sound to the seating area. Otherwise, the seating should surround the television at a distance that makes listening happen easily.

Living rooms should be places of comfort. They should be conducive to visiting and mingling with guests as well as watching television. With the listed tips above, your living room will bring comfort and joy to all of its inhabitants.

Those in the last trimester-Home improvement?
So, for those of you in those last 12 weeks, what is still left to do on you home improvement /baby preparation lists?

I am 32 weeks. We got the Baby's room set up last night. All we have left is to put new flooring down in the Kitchen and Living Room and paint those rooms in the last 7.5 weeks. Also we need to get some clothes and other baby items together.

How can I boost my laptops wireless card's range?
I live in a building that's wired up for wireless internet. I have two wireless cards: A) whatever came with it a few years ago and B) a recent purchase:Netgear WN511B RangeMax NEXT Wireless Notebook Adapter (suppose to be an 11n)

Our unit is 1 bedroom- about 700 sqft. We get a great signal in the main hallway outside our unit and a pretty good to decent signal in the kitchen (closest room to the hallway) but nothing when we move into the living room (about 10 feet from the kitchen).

The network technician for our building says he just hooked up a router at our end of the hallway, but we have zero improvement in our signal. You would think that if a new router was placed at our end that there would be at LEAST 1 or 2 Mbps improvement. But I don't know.

He suggested that it was a laptop/hardware issue because laptops don't put out as much power to conserve battery life. Maybe, I don't know. I don't know much about wireless network, but I'm learning.

By the way- it seems that i connect to another computer. I think that's what I'm connecting too… "Havoc Enabled", computer to computer, or something like that. I'm completely ignorant to this stuff and I'm at work so I can't look it up. But when connected to this/ in this mode, it has a laptop symbol beside that choice and has a connection rate of 130Mbps, but doesn't allow the internet browser to work. The other network connection is prompted with an antenna as a router, but has a very, very weak signal.

Window blinds can give your living room privacy from your neighbors’ who happen to pass by your window and ‘accidentally’ looked inside your house. In choosing window blinds, you have to be careful and picky. You should consider style, design, and color that could fit in well to your existing living room decorations. You can choose one from the many available window blinds in the market such as the following:

? Venetian Blinds. These are the most common type of blinds and are found in many residential houses today. These are horizontal in position and are usually made from various materials such as bamboo, wood, plastic, and vinyl. These are also great if you always use your living room if you have formal visitors.

? Track Blinds. Unlike Venetian blinds, track blinds have vertical blinds and are usually made of plastic, metal, and very string and sturdy fabric. If you want to dim your living room to have that romantic feel, just draw back the blinds a bit and only a small amount of light will pass through and enter the living room.

? Shutter Blinds. Sometimes referred to as plantation shutters, shutter blinds are the kind of treatment for your windows that are made of wood panels that are usually attached to hinges. They have louvers and when you adjust them to your liking, a good amount of light and fresh air will enter the living room. If your living room has an Oriental, a Mediterranean, or a Southern theme, it is bets to use shutter blinds because they are made of very fine wood which is unique for these design themes.

? Roller Blinds. These are similar to regular curtains because they also use blackout fabrics which blocks light. The main difference is that curtains just hang loose from the top of the window while roller blinds have roller kits that cover the entire area occupied by your window which makes it a very good accessory if you want to have privacy in your living room. You can choose different colors and patterns. Not only are they stylish and unique, they also block UV rays that are harmful to human skin and has negative effects to furniture and other house furnishings.

Window blinds can do great things in your living room. It can create privacy and adds character and style while at the same time creating a specific mood or ambience that you want to have in your living room.

Ladies: In general, does your husband like helping out with the home improvement projects around the house?
We bought a new home almost two years ago, and it's just as bare as it was the day we bought it. We have furniture for all of the rooms, but there are other things that I have been wanting to do such as: hang ceiling fans, install a garage door opener, hang curtains and valances, get our windows measured for wood blinds, install a screen door and a new front door, etc. The problem is I don't know how to do any of those things. My husband doesn't really know how either, but he's not interested in learning. I know how to use a power drill and hang pictures and other "no brainer" things, but I have a husband here, who's tall and healthy, and he won't even try.

I suggested we do things together. Since neither of us know what to do, I thought it would be a good idea for both of us to try and figure it out. On the rare occasion that I can get him to do something he wants to take control of it. After weeks of basically begging him he finally hung the curtain rods, but believe me when I say he didn't want to do it. A year or so after we were married I had to "convince" him to purchase a new living room set. He finally agreed. Earlier this year I was finally able to convince him that we needed a bedroom set. He finally agreed. I purchased a used dining table and china cabinet off Craigslist for a good price earlier this year, so that's the only reason he was in agreeance to that.

I understand he's a man and he's probably not interested in home decor like I am. That's my passion. But when I want to go find a picture, accessories for the house, furniture, etc. I have to do it alone. When I went to look for curtains I went by myself. There are times when I ask him to drive me somewhere to look at something for the house, and he refuses to go (because he doesn't like the fact that I walk around the store twice to make sure I'm not missing a deal). When he does agree to take me, which is rare because I try not to ask, he has an attitude. I can't even ask him to help me move anything around the house.

Yesterday, I asked him to help me move the china cabinet down a little bit. It's two pieces and I'm short and didn't want to turn the whole thing over. He was in the middle of playing a video game when I asked him. I didn't want to ask him to begin with but I had no choice. He acted like I was killing him. He told me I should have asked him when his friends were over (on New Year's Eve … as if I was thinking about it then) so he could have help. There's only a few glasses in the china cabinet and we moved those, and I was willing to help him … I just didn't want to move it by myself.

I just don't understand this. This is his house too, but it's almost like I have to beg him to do anything around here. I guess he figures because he's not interested in home decor and how things look, and since it's my thing, he shouldn't have to help. When I told him I was going to hire my cousin's handyman to help us out, he said, "I didn't think we had money for that" in a sarcastic tone. I've got to do something. I bought shelving for the pantry several months ago. After trying to get it up I asked him. He started talking about what I'd have to have to hang it, etc. … when all the stuff we need is already at home. He just makes excuse after excuse when I ask him to do something of that nature … and he always has something negative to say like, "That hanger isn't strong enough to hold that mirror" or "This isn't the right type of screw" when in reality it works just fine.

A little history – he is an only child and his mother has never been into decorating. His father is not a home improvements type of guy either. In their home it's just whatever … as long as they can use it they don't care how it looks. That's fine with me and I can respect that. That's their home and I don't look down on them because they're not into decorating, but I am …

I am sharp when it comes to computers and business stuff, but hardware, tools, and measurements just go right over my head. I'm horrible when it comes to math. But if I could learn how to do these things I would. I'm tired of begging him and as long as I sit and wait on him to become interested in what I'm doing (he'll never be that), I'll be sitting in the same place.

I have several relatives who know how to do flooring, ceiling fans, etc. and I asked one to come help me the other day. The first thing he said is, "Okay … but what about your husband?" I'm so embarassed because my family will ask if we've got this up and that up, and I have to say no … and they're all looking like "Doesn't she have a husband?"

What should I do?
Edit: I was able to find some people to paint the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom … after asking him to help me paint. I've never painted before, but I was willing to try because it couldn't be THAT hard.
Edit 2: Yesterday, I decided to return the curtains I'd bought for my living and dining room. The panels were easy to hang, but I bought a scarf and couldn't get it to act right. Because I'm so short, and because the scarf is so long … you really need two people to work with it. When I took it back to the store that's what the lady said … exactly what she said … it takes to people … I just laughed. I don't have a second person.

Feng Shui Living Room Arrangement

It always has to do with arrangement. Now I want you to imagine ‘Chi’ or good energy as constantly circulating through the air in the world. It is your job to create a sort of a magnet by correctly arranging your furniture in a way that this good energy will find it too irresistible not to pay your house a visit.

Evaluate how your chairs, tables, couches, sofas and even your TV are placed. Avoid clutter and haphazard arrangement because that is like creating an impossible labyrinth for Chi to circumnavigate. Seats should also be moved or in some way arranged so that people sitting them have either a full or partial view of the doorway/entrance.

Brightness and clarity are the true friends of this wholesome energy. Light fixtures, studio lamps or even a few coloured candles will do wonders to light up your living room and attract Chi.

Not a light person? Well you can ‘brighten’ up your place in other ways, by simply adding accessories like statues, mirrors or even some potted plants that breathe life into living spaces.

Also, if you have a backdoor that is visible from the main entrance, try to use mirrors and perhaps maybe a screen cover to sort of ‘hide’ its presence. Money, luck and prosperity, riding on the waves of Chi will just sort of ride all the way to your back door and out of your house.

The secret is also not only to funnel Chi into your house, but to also retain it so that it can continually benefit your house. You can also use mirrors to take attention away from the exit; mirrors can also be used to reflect more light to brighten up a room or even increase visual clarity of the entire space, making the living room appear larger than it actually was.
