Little Living Room Decorating

Rooms are easy to furnish, but are they welcoming? Have you ever stepped into a dimly lit room with a large gray couch and a dark table? Surely it seems there’s enough room for everything, but they won’t be fitting for a large group to stay in. Here’s some helpful hints.

Light and Soft Hues A room looking hip is typically a matter of the walls. In a small living room you can try painting it with ‘cool’ colors like blue or green. Make sure the shades in the room are of darker color, to compliment the entire room. If you follow those rules, you can actually give the appearance of a higher ceiling.

Tips with Window Treatments If you have window treatments, you can use them to give the appearance of height. To accomplish this feat, just have them move up towards the ceiling. Definitely worth a try. Oversized Objects Oversized or over-scaled pictures can be paintings, picture frames and patterns. With this visual trick you can make your living room appear bigger than it is.

Hold on to the Necessities It’s important you leave space in your living room. Sometimes the best thing you can put in a room is space. The more space in your rooms, the more free and clear it will feel. Now don’t take this the wrong way and empty out the room, but skinny furniture can not only give a hip look, but help free up some room.

Flowing Curtains When picking a curtain, you need to think length, and you need to think light colors. White curtains are extremely charming, but are kind of tricky maintaining. A bonus though for those willing to maintain it, is the benefit of natural cool light entering your room. Did you know the more natural air and light you have flowing in your room, the less sweaty and musty your room will smell. Heavy drapes hold in all kinds of scents for indeterminate amounts of time, they are definitely something to avoid.

Coordinating Colors One of the most key things to remember when decorating your living room is to coordinate all the wall colors with the furniture colors. You’re going to have to do a little research and look into what combinations are best. For example, light green goes well with white, it’s bright and soothing. All kinds of combinations suit a variety of personalities.

Amazing Reflective Surfaces You can pull off some stunning visual effects just with some mirrors. A small living room can suddenly look twice as large. If you have a big plain wall at your disposal, you should add a huge mirror with some artificial lighting. What this does is create a very rich and large living room layout.

Light makes Space Strangely enough, light fabrics make the room appear larger. In the past, lighter fabrics were only for the wealthy, but now anyone can have light sheets. This is a great technique because it just looks clean in the end, and who wouldn’t want that?

Help answer the question about living room improvement

When making home improvements, which is of more value in the long run – Pocket Doors or Interior French Doors?
I am cutting a hole in a wall between my living room and a spare bedroom that we no longer use. What I'm going to do is to put my sleeper sofa in the new open area for when we do have guests that spend the night.

I have 2 options: I can put a set of interior french doors (5') that can be closed for guests or left open to have a larger area.

The second option is to put a set of pocket doors in and I can use 36" doors for a wider opening.

The cost is about the same either way I go.

Anyone have any ideas?

Check Craigslist for your area (www.craigslist.com). There is even a free section. For cheap slipcover for couches try getting a canvas dropcloth from the local hardware store. I have also cut up a dropcloth and made it into curtains (I made them extra long and wide so as I moved to different apartments I brought them with me and they would always fit and since all the curtains matched it didn't matter how many windows were in each room). You could get fabric paint and have your daughter help paint on the dropcloths. She could also use stamps for the paint. Also try Oops paint for any furniture you get (you probably can't paint the walls if you rent). But if you get older furniture you can paint it to all match. Oops paint is usually at your hardware store and is paint that was mixed but was the wrong color so they reduce prices to sell it quickly.

So its your boyfriends furniture! :) This is a great base to work from, its clean strong and dosent cost much to accessorize. One fabulous painting or poster can give you a color scheme. Paint a wall anyway you can paint it out when you leave, just an accent wall. If its not carpeted check out area rugs with color, ikea.com, designwithinreach.com, Layer the leather with texture and pattern, zebra, feathers, silk, metallics, make these as artistic and lavish and you can and you will set the tone for the style you want to create.Ambiance comes from chrome lamps, glass with sparkle accents. See ethan allen…modern glamor and loft styles. Forget investing in curtains its not necessary and will contrast with the clean lines you have going already. I hope you new home is very happy :)

I would think that browns, oranges in the right area of the color wheel would look really good. Somewhere in that mix, throw in just a pinch of the navy to blend it all together.

You need to search for complimentary colors that are directly across from the color that you're trying to match. I've included a link to show you.

The first thing you need to do is conceptualize and visualize. You don't have to paint the walls a light color to bring a feeling of light to the room. Confirmation lies in your currently white walls. You want peoples vision to be drawn to certains elements of the room that create a feeling of "openness". I suggest a mirror or two strategically placed will make the room feel more open, or larger. The feeling of darkness is often derived from a room that feels small, cramped or cluttered. As far as the walls go, you want either your entertainment center (if its fairly large), or your sofa set to be the focal point of the room. So you need some contrast that makes those things stand out. I suggest a color darker than yellow and lighter than orange. Something in a kind of terracota texture can be achieved with the right tool from home depot, or loews. Add curtains that are closer to yellow, but still a bit darker. This will make the windows a bit of a focal point, which will make people think of light. The wall color will make both the sofa and the entertainment center pop. If you are going to go as far as redoing the floor, I suggest a wood floor alond the lines of a Mahoghany. Add a throw rug and lamps that bring the curtains and the entertainment center together. Buy one of those huge ceramic vases that are about 3 foot tall. Create a dry flower arrangement that has browns, burgandys, yellows and a little black. Make it at least 6 foot tall in total. Hope this all helps, have fun.

Dark brown espresso colored furniture would be the perfect one.
You could match the curtains to the furniture or you could use really any color but here are some ideas:

    -Light Creamy Green
    -Robin's Egg Blue
    -Aqua
    -Pink or Purple.

The natural colors like green gives a fresh healthy look for the walls.

As far as the broke part, try these:

    http://www.freecycle.com
    http://www.craigslist.com (look for moving sales)

And try to hit any yard sales you see. If you have a Wal-Mart, check out the sewing section. They have bins of clearanced ribbons and materials. You can get some pretty gold ribbon to accent a plain candle you might find, etc.

I think your idea of gold or bronze-ish is excellent. Given the colors of the walls and carpet, it's probably the best way to go.

Yes, light gold curtains would certainly work for your color theme. The curtains will bring out the gold from your chairs.
Add a couple of green pillows and gold pillows to continue the color through out your living room.

I love the buttery yellow! Accent with pillows, throwns, rugs in burgandy. Mix solid w/prints. Hang family pics in inexpensive black frames. Shop thrift stores for all these items. Spray paint can work wonders! You can paint lamps, pic frames, etc. You should find a large pic for over your sofa or you could hang a group of pics up there. Over the fireplace replace the mirror with a pic, rod iron piece or a wreath. I use old hardback books. I stack 3 or 4 books and sit knik knacks on them. Very inexpensive. Hang a shelf up high and display items. It will make the room seem warmer. Nice window treaments would really help also. Use your imagination…watch HGTV and check out HGTV.com. Lots of great cheap ideas. You can work wonders with $250. I wish I lived near; I love to decorate. It is a challenge for me….my relaxation. Good luck!
